I’m a painter at heart, I love to paint from life in intense bursts, attempting to capture the essence of the sitter in the energy of the brushwork and vibrancy of the colours . I’ve painted portraits of my friends and fellow creatives, often wearing the wearable art I create as a form of documentation and a way of owning my aesthetic.
I was born in the Midlands ,emigrated to apartheid South Africa with my parents at 11 years of age and returned to the UK as soon as I could make enough money to come home 11 years later. As Dorothy says , “There’s no place like home “and apartheid South Africa felt very much like Munchkinland to a working class English girl at the time . No wonder I felt the need to settle permanently in the diverse cultural melting pot that is Brixton, upon my return. South Africa had politicised me, lit the touchpaper of my art school rebellious side. I knew in my bones that diversity was humanity’s greatest gift and I didn’t know at the time, that 20 years or so later I would draw on this rich fuel to inspire my art.
